Stones and Crystals

Stones and crystals have a long history of being used for magick and are popular for both magkical and metaphysical uses today. They have both generic associations by color and specific uses or properties by type of stone.

Generically (according to Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem, and Metal Magic):

Red stones are related to the planet Mars and the element of fire; are used to strengthen the body and willpower; promote courage, lend energy to the body, and provide additional power to rituals; in ancient times were used to guard against fire and lightning; in healing are linked with blood, rashes, and inflammations, and are used to overcome sexual dysfunction.

Pink stones are calming, soothing, and used to de-stress and relax the physical body and mind; are used to attract or strengthen an already present love; can be worn to promote self love (not narcissism); promote peace, happiness, joy and laughter, attract friends and encourage openness toward others.

Orange stones are used in protective rituals and those designed to promote illumination; are related to personal power, enhancing your ability to tap into and direct this energy; are thought to be luck attracting; are a symbol of success.

Yellow stones are ruled by Mercury and by the Sun; are used in rituals involving communication and are worn to facilitate expressing oneself (Mercury); are protective (Sun); are ruled by the element of air, which indicates they can be used to strengthen the conscious mind, and heighten visualization abilities; in healing are used to promote digestion, regulate the nervous system, and for skin problems.

Green stones are associated with the element Earth; are used in healing by visualizing the sick person as vibrant and totally healthy; are worn or carried to safeguard the health; are believed to strengthen the eyes, control the kidneys, relieve stomach problems and prevent migraines; are thought to increase fertility and promote conception; are used in spells involving money, riches, prosperity, and luck.

Blue stones are ruled by the element of water and the planet Neptune; promote peace; promote healing in general, and specifically to reduce fever, remove ulcers and their causes, and for eliminating inflammations; are held to reduce or remove pain from the body; can be used for self purification.

Purple (or indigo) stones are the color of healing and peace; are ruled by Jupiter and Neptune; are associated with mysticism and purification; are worn for meditation, psychic work, or ritual designed to contact the subconscious mind; physically are used to relive complaints of the head (headache, mental illness, concussion, and hair problems); relieve depression and produce restful sleep.

White stones are ruled by the Moon; are linked with sleep and psychism; are used for protection after dark.

Black stones represent earth and stability; are ruled by Saturn; are symbolic of self-control, resilience, and quiet power; are protective (they absorb negativity); and are often used to “ground” a person.

Specific uses are listed in the description for each of the stones.

Stones will absorb and hold energy so they should be cleansed periodically. Cleansing may be done by many different methods – exposure to sunlight, placing in dish of salt, putting the stone in running water, or burying it in the earth. Be sure to use a method that is appropriate to the type of stone you are using, for example, gypsum should not be cleansed in running water, opals should not be placed in a dish of salt.

Once your stone is cleansed, it should be charged. The easiest way to do this is to expose the stone overnight to the light of the full moon.

Stones may be carried or placed in your environment to absorb their energies.

As in all things magickal, the information regarding the properties of stones is intuitive, not scientifically verified. We encourage you to determine what is true for you. We advocate individual responsibility for one’s exploration of these ideas. We do not advocate the use of stones as a replacement for medical or psychological care. We cannot guarantee any results with any stone.
