Basic Tarot

Barbara Munnelly
Learn to read the tarot cards in this fun, hands-on, four-week class. Barbara will teach you how to understand the symbols and meanings of each card. Basic tarot spreads will be introduced. In order to practice the techniques learned in this class, free Tarot Readings will be offered by the Tarot Class on the final day of class, Saturday, April 7th from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. (April 14th if we have had a snow cancellation). Students will need a Rider-Waite Tarot Deck or a Radiant Rider-Waite Tarot Deck for this course. Tarot decks are available for purchase at the store. Please bring a pen, small notebook, and tarot deck to class.
The first week of this class will start at 4:00 p.m. instead of 3:30 due to a scheduling conflict with the Grandmother's Wisdom Circle

The Fool's Journey: Understanding the Major Arcana

Familiarize yourself with the meanings of the 22 Major Arcana cards of the Tarot. Where did they come from? What role do they fill in the Tarot? How do they relate to you? Through group meditation, exercises, and reading practice, you'll not only better understand the Major Arcana's role in the Tarot, but also how it fits into your life. We are all the Fool; we are all on our own Journeys. What is the story of your Journey? Who are your Trump characters? Things you gotta know to read the Tarot well!!!
Courtney Weber is a Priestess, writer, Tarot Advisor, performer, and activist originally from Portland, OR. She received ordination as a Priestess of Pan from Rev. Cyn DeFay of the Cluan-Feart Mystery School in 2005 and a Third Degree Initiation as a Priestess of Brid from Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone in 2009. She is the HPS of Novices of the Old Ways, a Progressive Wiccan and Pagan group based in New York City and Portland, Oregon.
Since beginning the study of Tarot at the age of 15, Courtney has gained a national clientele base and is a highly popular Tarot consultant at corporate, community, and underground arts events in the Northeast Region including Harvest Gathering, Pagan Odyssey, New York Pagan Pride Day, the Tahuti Lodge of New York City, and the Pagan Center of New York. On the West Coast, she has taught Witchcraft and Tarot in Portland, OR, Napa, CA and in San Francisco. For two years, Courtney wrote (under the pen-name of Sister Mary Manhattan) the weekly cult-favorite astrologyexplained.blogspot.com as well as a featured astrologer on Oomph.net and Bakespace.com. Courtney was an active force on the Committee to Save St. Brigid's Church, which saved the historic cathedral from demolition in 2008. She is the producer and designer of “Tarot of the Boroughs,” a contemporary, Urban Tarot deck set in New York City with photography by George Courtney. Readers are frequently daunted by the Minor Arcana portion of the Tarot. In actuality, the Minor Arcana contains the majority of the divination in the deck - and is quite easy to decipher! Using creative exercises, dream work, and hands-on practice, would-be Tarot readers will walk away with confident knowledge of this normally cryptic portion of the Tarot.

A Summer of Tarot Workshops

This series of mini-workshops will offer the novice Tarot Reader descriptions of several useful Tarot interpretation tools, and instructions for making them a regular part of your readings. They are a “next step” to be taken after beginning the process of becoming familiar with Tarot Keywords.

Add different spreads to your Tarot repertoire! This class will present several different spreads focusing on useful subject matters along with instructions for expanding and exploding a spread to provide a more in-depth reading. We will also learn about the concept of the Significator card, and talk about several methods for choosing one. A basic understanding of the Tarot is recommended; bring your tarot deck.

Card Pairs and Reversals

Add texture and depth to your Tarot Readings! This class will help the novice Tarot Reader to understand and effectively use Card Pairs and Card Reversals in readings. Learn how to recognize the presence of Card Pairs in your spreads and read them with confidence, and use Reversals to add new meanings to the messages of the Tarot. A basic understanding of the Tarot is recommended; bring your tarot deck.

Court Cards and Major Arcana

Approach Court Cards and the Major Arcana with confidence! This class will help the novice Tarot Reader to make use of the messages of the Court Cards in Tarot spreads, and delve deeper into the archetypal and “shadow” meanings of the Major Arcana. A basic understanding of the Tarot is recommended; bring your tarot deck.
Nancy Fader's ("Raushanna") love of belly dance deepened as she learned of its long history and use as a sacred dance of Goddess worship. This, combined with her lifetime love of nature and animals, led Nancy to seek spiritual fulfillment in Wicca; she is a Third Degree dedicant of a teaching coven into which she was initiated in 2005.

Honing Your Tarot Skills (Tarot Practice Swap)

The most common complaint heard from students learning to read the tarot is that they have no one for whom to do practice readings. Because they know friends and family so well, they tend to read things into their readings instead of just allowing the reading to flow. These sessions will allow students to practice reading for a person they don't know. Students will be paired off and will read for each other with Barbara available for assistance should someone get stuck. The best way to become a good reader is to practice. Here's your chance! The swap is open to anyone learning to read tarot or who needs to brush up on their skills.
