The first sentence in Dianne Sylvan's introduction reads, "this is not a book on beginning Wicca", but I might have to disagree. The Circle Within: Creating a Wiccan Spiritual Tradition is not a book of spells or a how-to on assembling an altar. This is a book on Wiccan ethics and graces that can be applied to anyone. Reading The Circle Within, made me aware and really think about my relationship with Deity. Ms. Sylvan is thoughtful, down to earth, and humorous in her writing as she talks about creating and sustaining our intimacy with the God and Goddess. There is a section in the back called "Book of Moonlight" that includes prayers, devotionals, and blessings for everyday living. I use her "morning prayer" when I rise and I found it truly keeps me attuned to Deity from the start. There is a Zen belief that every act is ritual and I believe this book shows how to be mindful of what we do. How as Wiccans are we living our spirituality day to day and not just on sabbats and full moons? What is the "perfect" Wiccan in your mind? As a Wiccan, how would you like to present yourself to the world? These are just some of the questions that you may need to address as you read The Circle Within. Ms. Sylvan may say that this book is not about beginning Wicca, but I recommend that every beginning (and not so beginning) Wiccan read this book. Blessed be!
